Thousands of Zimbabweans poured onto the streets of Harare after President Robert Mugabe resigned on Tuesday, and cars were hooting in the streets. Some people were holding posters of Zimbabwean army chief Constantino Chiwenga and former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose sacking this month triggered the military takeover that forced Mugabe to resign. “We are just so happy that things are finally going to change,” Togo Ndhlalambi, 32, a hairdresser, told AFP. Mugabe had ruled Zimbabwe almost unopposed since the country won independence from Britain but his efforts to position his wife Grace as his successor triggered fury in the military that had underpinned his regime. His grip on power was shattered last week when the armoured military vehicles took to the streets, blockaded parliament and soldiers placed the president under house arrest in an operation that had all the hallmarks of a coup. But instead his generals stressed they were simply “arresting” criminals around M

Messi makes 600th Barcelona appearance

Image
Lionel Messi reached yet another milestone in his storied career as he made his 600th Barcelona appearance against Sevilla on Saturday. The Argentine made his Blaugrana debut under Frank Rijkaard back in October 2004, and has since gone on to be considered one of the greatest players ever. With 30 major titles to his name and a glut of individual honours, Messi's place as an all-time great is fully merited, and with Barca top of La Liga by one point over Valencia more honours may follow by the end of the current season. Of Messi's 600 appearances, 393 have come in the league, 119 in the Champions League, 62 in the Copa del Rey, 17 in the Supercopa de Espana and five and four respectively in the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Alcacer Stars as Barca Defeats Sevilla

Paco Alcacer made the most of a rare start as his double gave LaLiga leaders Barcelona a 2-1 home victory over Sevilla. Guido Pizarro's headed equaliser in between Alcacer's two strikes briefly threatened a surprise result, but a draw would have flattered fifth-placed Sevilla, who have now lost four consecutive away games. Barca have won 10 and drawn one of their first 11 league games and now sit 11 points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who are at home to Las Palmas on Sunday, in fourth. Sevilla have now failed to win in 15 attempts at Camp Nou, losing 13 of those meetings and conceding 40 goals in the process.

Femi Fani-Kayode: The slaves of Nigeria

Image
Many years ago, the irrepressible Hausa leader who hailed from Kano and who was the founder of the radical leftist political party called NEPU, Mallam Aminu Kano, said, ”Until the Fulani Emirs are toppled northern Nigeria will not know peace”. History has proved him right. The feudal structure of the north and its deeply conservative ethos has resulted in nothing but retrogression, poverty, disease, radical Islam, terror and killer herdsmen. Yet the problem goes much further than the north: it extends to the whole of Nigeria. Worse still it has affected the psyche of the Nigerian people and left them with a very low self-esteem. We have become victims and casualties of our modern history and little more than miserable serfs in a Fulani-controlled artificial, man-made vassal state which deems non-Fulanis as nothing more than the biblical “hewers of the wood” and “drawers of the water”. In our very own eyes we are nothing and in our hearts we believe that the Fulani are everythi

500 Nigerians in Chinese prison – Presidency

Image
The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Thursday revealed that there were about 500 Nigerians in Chinese prisons detained for various offences. Dabiri-Erewa made this known on the side line of an international seminar on Nigeria-China relations in Abuja. She, however, refuted claims that there were thousands of Nigerians detained in Chinese prisons and explained that there was no prisoner transfer agreement between both countries. “You hear 2000 but that is exaggerated. I think we have less than 500 Nigerians in Chinese prisons. “Until we sign a treaty; there is no treaty between both countries for prisoners’ transfer, when that exists the transfer of prisoners would be possible. “We get a lot of appeals and some prisoners say they want to move from one prison there to another, it is not going to happen. “We have been talking to them but their law is their law. My appeal to Nigerians is to obey the laws

Nigeria must use oil wealth to prepare for future – Osinbaj

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday said Nigeria must use its oil wealth to prepare for a future when the world no longer runs on fossil fuels. The vice president stated this at the 55th anniversary of the Oil Producers Trade Section of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lagos. He said Nigeria, as a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), needed to develop renewable energy and help other businesses flourish to adjust to the reality of the dwindling significance of fossil fuels. “It is no longer a question of if but when,” Mr. Osinbajo said, referring to global efforts to shift away from oil as a fuel. “Oil-rich countries, such as ourselves, have an obligation to prepare for a destiny that may well be beyond oil,” he said. He said the government had long talked of diversifying Africa’s largest economy away from reliance on oil, but earnings from output of crude still provide two-thirds of state revenue.
